Bee & Butterfly Garden
_
The owner of this family garden in St Albans, Hertfordshire wanted an untraditional garden without a lawn but with space for a trampoline and an entertainment area and plants to attract a diverse range of insects. At 9 x 11 metres the garden was too large to pave so the space has been divided into two areas linked by a path between two large beds of rich naturalistic planting. Himalayan birch and Pyrus chanticleer provide privacy and interest. The planting palette is predominantly white, lilac and bright pink and includes reliable perennials, ornamental grasses, ferns, bulbs and small shrubs. The plants demand little attention and are ideal for anyone who wants a pretty natural garden but who has little time to manage it.

“Garden design isn’t just about plants, it is about emotion, atmosphere, a sense of contemplation”
