Dalton House, St Albans
A current project I am working on is the planting design for the garden of Dalton House in St Albans, a Grade II listed building believed to be the inspiration for Charles Dickens’ book Bleak House. The beautiful 18th century building is in the heart of St Albans city and the garden was a blank canvas. The lawn at the back of the house has been removed to make way for a Mediterranean-style gravel garden, with a beautiful sculpture as the focal point, reflecting the clients’ love of art. The courtyard gravel garden will include a seating area and an outdoor kitchen. The front needed a planting design with ‘wow’ factor to complement the grand building. Again, I decided to remove the lawn that flanked the gravel drive, as it didn’t really add anything to the setting, and replaced it with dramatic naturalistic borders. Work to be completed 2019.
